I once lived in a small jungle hut surrounded by palm trees in Thailand, on a mountaintop with geckos, painting “Pitaya Morning”. At sunrise the sky turned bright orange and I ate pitayas for breakfast every morning, which were juicy and delicious there. These colorful, bright pink fruits and the sultry heat of Thailand inspired me to make this painting, which reflects my feeling of living like Tarzan (maybe Jane) in the middle of the jungle with tropical flowers, big butterflies, listening to the sounds of birds, talking to geckos and watching the tall palm trees sway in the wind above the banana plantation.
My bright colors have been joined by black in Thailand. I have never used black so much in my works. Black brings out the bright tones. Black color is like Thailand. Black, hot, difficult, dense, powerful and wildly primal. Black as a tropical night, black as a tired traveler's soul, black as the body and gaze of a southerner, black as gratitude that after a difficult dark night a bright sun always rises.
Every morning I greeted the bright sunrise, surrounded by palm trees and tropical flowers, with sweet tropical fruits - mangoes, pitayas, pineapples, bananas and papayas. This wonderful and simple life inspired me to create a collection of artworks of Thai tropical life.
