Dahab inspires me to paint in bright colors – I am like a thirsty desert walker going for pink bougainvillea, white oleanders that smell like vanilla dessert, for the hot desert sun, for the sounds of prayers from the mosques, for the pink sunset sky over the Red Sea.
As a child I read stories and fairy tales about foreign lands, archaeologists, travelers and princesses. And such stories I continue to read, and I go out into the world to look for and find the miraculous to then depict it in my paintings.
The painting was created in Dahab, Egypt, with the sounds of the nearby French cafe where people were leisurely drinking tea coming through the open window, the palm trees swayed in the wind in the distance, the blue sky and brown desert mountains made me happy and the view of the sea inspired me. This painting has all my love for the eastern lands, the heat of the desert, the Red Sea, the mountains of Saudi Arabia in the distance, the Bedouin moon hanging above the strawberry pink sky, the oriental princesses in their palaces waiting for their maharajah at home, camels and bedouins, flowers and palm trees.
The painting was made during Christmas, I brought the canvas with me from Latvia, the frame was made by a local Egyptian carpenter.
