Living in a tropical hut in the jungle in the middle of the green island of Phuket is the best thing that happened to me in Thailand, because I like to live in places where I can be creative. In this jungle hut, I feel like Tarzan or Jane, who spends her days surrounded by the green leaves of the jungle, listening to the sounds of tropical birds and sharing her modest hut with other jungle inhabitants – geckos, ants, mosquitoes and other animals. The geckos are the owners of this house – they crawl on the walls and rustle in my bags, look me in the eyes and inspire me to draw them. While I was drawing this work, a gecko sitting on a ceiling did a mess on my painting, hitting the gecko I had drawn. At that moment, it seemed that the God of the jungle was speaking to me powerfully.
As befits a true Tarzan, the hut is very simple, without air conditioning, but there is a mosquito net and a thatched roof. A rusty pot and a crooked frying pan. Sometimes I make pancakes. Afraid that the decking board will break under me, I watch the locals below, hiding from the sun in the shade of banana trees. And before I drink water or coconut water from a cup, I look to see if anyone already lives there.
This work is inspired by hot jungle nights in a hut, when I sleep in a mosquito net covered bed with the doors and windows open, when it is pitch black outside, it is hot, sweat runs down my face, but a slow breeze runs through the house, allowing me to fall asleep easily, only to wake up in the morning with the sounds of the jungle and the orange or red sunrise sky.
In Thailand, black has joined my bright colors. I have never used so much black in my work. Black brings out bright tones. Black is like Thailand. Black, hot, hard, dense, powerful and wildly primal. Black as a tropical night, black as the soul of a tired traveler, black as the body and gaze of a southerner, black as gratitude that after a difficult dark night a bright sun always rises.
And that's why I like to travel and create art during my travels. Because only by experiencing a different life can you feel the difference and paint what you have experienced and seen yourself.
